So, Sun has launched a consulting service to help companies use java better.

This seems like the marketing department at Sun needs to shore up the value propositition that Sun is giving.

So, I thought Sun was a hardware manufacturer? Is consulting one of their core competencies? Are they trying to make it one?

I think Java is an example of poor strategy in general. Sun, rather than spin
off the company that makes Java, submit it for ECMA standardization and
let the market sort it out have tried to become the supplier of integrated solutions. This probably seemed like a good idea in ‘99 when the bubble was in full bloom but now people want more than one-vendor integration, they actually want
integrated solutions.
