MT Licensing
I’m conflicted about the change in licensing for Movable Type. I like their software a lot, but I don’t know if I like it enough to pay for it.
On the surface this may sound stupid. You may be thinking that I just want something for free and
that I’m unhappy my new toy requires quarters.
Software is a creative endevor, much like music or art or theatre. There are many musicians that I would glady listen to for free that I would not pay for. My dollars are a scarce resource and I must allocate them. I can keep using this version of MT for as long as I like, and I applaud
Six Apart for allowing single bloggers to use the software for free that really is nice of them.
But back to the issue at hand. My problem is that I feel as though I am a single blogger. I have two blogs, my Wife has one. We are two authors, and I only have two blogs because it feels better in my head to seperate the two blogs (one is writing the other is writing software).
I’m not talking out of my ass about the code as creative endevor either (to get back on track once again). It is, and I do believe that those who produce quality creative works should be rewarded for it. Note that I use reward, not compensated. Wordnet has six definitions for “compensate”
From WordNet (r) 2.0 (August 2003) [wn]:
compensate
- v adjust or make up for; “engineers will work to correct the
effects or air resistance” [syn: {counterbalance},
{correct}, {even out}, {even off}, {even up}] - make amends for; pay compensation for; “One can never fully
repair the suffering and losses of the Jews in the Third
Reich”; “She was compensated for the loss of her arm in
the accident” [syn: {recompense}, {repair}, {indemnify}] - make up for shortcomings or a feeling of inferiority by
exaggerating good qualities; “he is compensating for being
a bad father” [syn: {cover}, {overcompensate}] - make reparations or amends for; “right a wrongs done to the
victims of the Holocaust” [syn: {right}, {redress},
{correct}] [ant: {wrong}] - do or give something to somebody in return; “Does she pay
you for the work you are doing?” [syn: {pay}, {pay off},
{make up}] - make payment to; compensate; “My efforts were not
remunerated” [syn: {recompense}, {remunerate}]
and all are (basically) related to “making up for”. But what are we making up for SixApart? No,
we are rewarding them, by giving them money, which can be exchanged for goods and services.
the problem is, however, that I am confliced by the license change and I don’t know if I like
the software enough to pay for it.
