people on the street

I ran into a guy I used to work with today. I was headed to lunch, he was headed back. I attended his wedding, and liked his wife a lot. That was a long time ago.

I’m caught between the desire to talk to those people from the past and my desire to turn away and ignore them. I got the feeling from Tim that he was thinking the same thing.

This is an issue I only think about when I run into someone like this, so I don’t get that much of a chance to think about it, BUT it has happened twice this week and I think this is a sign.

Long time no blog

I’ve been silent lately. No blogging. I am not taking the month off, though that was a thought a one point. Many blogs, from what I read, get abandoned after a short period of time.

This is not abandonment, and I am not rationalizing. I say this because I want to make sure everybody is on the same page. I just ran out of things to say.

If you know me, you may be surprised to hear this, but it’s true. And I’ve been thinking a lot about this loss of words.

Being a man in early 21st century america you do not have to be expressive. In fact, expressiveness in men is often seen as a weakness. The movies we watch and the entertainment we seek often portray men as not expresive to say the least. Hell, yesterday on the OC the main female characters said of her (no ex) boyfriend “He punches people, that’s what he does. He doesn’t talk to them.” And even though (his character’s name is Ryan) Ryan’s actions are portrayed in a negative light they are still, within the context of the show, morally correct.

I’m circling the point now, but I’m closing in. Right now, I’m about halfway through a book that is, I think, making a huge impact on my life. This book is not the bible or the talmud or the koran. It is not spiritual in any sane sense. It is intensly pragmatic.

Now, on to the point: I think we as a society forget that communication has a pragmatic side. Not only that, but the act of communication is what seperates Us from the Animals. However, communication is not the ONLY thing that seperates Us from the Animals. We (and I mean me, but feel free to mean you too) must remember and endover to insure that we balance the things that make us Us and remember that We are not all Us.
And so, in an excersize of communication I blog this, and in an excersize of thought I still consider this.

Now, if only I could excersize like excersize i’d be thinner and communicative.
