I need to learn spanish.
It is really stupid of me to live in a major urban center and not
know spanish, especially when this urban center is Chicago. Chicago
has a huge spanish-speaking population.
The only problem is: which spanish? Mexican is probably the most useful in
town, but there are a lot of people from other regions, especially Peuto Rico.

First comment! ĦQue bueno!
Imagine how I feel. My father-in-law is a spanish professor. Speaks like a native. My brother-in-law worked at a law firm for migrant workers in Michigan, and speaks reasonably well. My wife also understands pretty well, having taken Spanish in college.
I took Spanish in high school. I was a really fast learner, and I remember a lot considering how long it’s been, but I still don’t feel much good about it.
I have to agree it’s very useful, though. Just learning textbook Spanish, while not authentic, is really useful. Just being able to read is good. Forget about speaking like a native. At this point we’re too old. Just settle for learning enough to sound like you’re making an effort. Supposedly hispanohablantes are generally more forgiving about people trying to speak to them in their native language.
